Perverse as it may sound, going out in bad weather can give some great days out in the hills! I once went up Beinn Alligin in Scotland after weather warnings of strong gales - and it was superb. Loose rocks on top of the hill were rocking in the wind, making these weird banging noises, something I'v...

No, I wasn't there. I don't doubt that the weather was atrocious, but the sort of commentary coming from the news 24 reporters was sensationalist rubbish. For example, there was talk of people being 'forced to camp out overnight', forgetting to mention that this is actually part of the OMM. There wa...

As of about 2pm today, BBC News 24 is reporting ALL participants have now been accounted for. A bit of wind (mooning) and rain (rain) never did anybody any harm! I'm sure much of this was over hyped by the news organisations in search of a good story. "1500 people missing in Lake District"...

Strange. When I looked at the trace using google earth it came up slightly short of the Clay Bank road. When measured using the 'ruler' button, you came up short by about 50ft. I'm using Google Earth version 4.3.7284.3916 (beta). Thought at first it could be GPS datum problem, but the IGC file says ...

Relive that great flight........

......or even see how it was done. Came across mention of 'IGC Flight Replay' on paraglidingforum.com. It allows you replay your flight (or anyone else's) and give's you a pilots eye view of the flight in Google Earth. It's in the early stages of development, but it looks very promising as an educat...

The last two times I've been out midweek at a notamed site there's been some sort of military activity. East Hill had a low flying helicopter come past very low over the trees near the parking area, and Captain Cooks had two low flying training aircraft come over, using the monument as a turning poi...

John, Have a look at http://ukgarminairmap.wikispaces.com/ As you can see, the airmaps are updated on a fairly regular basis, every few months or so. More often than the paper maps. While they are not 'official', 'CAA approved' etc. there is a large enough community out there using them, so any prob...

Paragliding is far too dangerous.........

........So I think I'll take up kayaking instead. After all, it'll be quite a nice, quiet float down a river. With the birds singing, and the gentle lapping of the river against the kayak. What can possibly go wrong?
