I've just been playing with Google Earth, and it looks like a new weather feature has appeared (well, it's the first time I've noticed it!!)
In the 'Layers' section on the bottom left hand side there's a 'Weather' tick box, with options for Clouds and Radar. The Information tab suggests that the Radar (ie rain) data is updated every 5 - 6 minutes.
Might be useful for getting the 'big picture' before traveling.
I'm running the latest version of Google Earth 5.0.11337.1968 (beta), so you may need to upgrade if you are running an older version.
