A cautionary note

Post by colin keightley »

If any of you guys especially low airtimers are out for a ground handle. Just remember if it thermic it is actually possible to become airborne.

Might sound daft but Sunday I was airing out my wing on the school field and the thermals were coming through every couple of minutes and really strong aswell 1 thermal had me 6 feet off the ground in less than a second only my quick reactions of stalling the wing brought me back to terra firma the next time I was ready for it and stalled it before I was 4 feet off the ground then decided it was a bit dicy and put my wing away.

Had I not been in teesside airspace I would have probably tried to fly it.

Not really sure that recommending stalling the glider is a good suggestion in a cautionary tale for beginners Colin!!!

Stuart, have you been on Gary's sensible pills? that has to be the first post of yours not to involve sheep or other sexual deviations. Or is this stall thing one I haven't heard of?
See you out there!!!!!

Yeah maybe i should have been a bit clearer,

Dont do what i did, instead of being stubborn if its really lively just put it away you could end up getting seriously hurt.

Thats the point i didnt end up making whilst getting carried away telling you what happened to me.

That would be interesting if you could start a flight from standing in a flat field and I dare say you could do it. Have you ever seen the footage of the kite surfers being pulled sykwards from the beach :o You could start a new XC league Colin you wouldn't need a hill into wind Hmmmm sounds good :)

If it wasnt for the fact i live deep in Teesside CTA then i certainly would have had a go.

Dont know if its coincidence or not but the wind direction meant that the air was peeling round the furnace at North Tees Hospital before reaching the field.

Your all welcome to it... I for one would not like being in a thermal that was so powerful as to lift you off the deck from 20ft !!! Colin, you should off put the wing in the bag the first time and count your blessings...

Good post though :o

You would not believe how much I had to restrain myself to not post on Ron's MORNING GLORY thread.

He's done a bigger XC from the ground than most people have from East Hill.
