Accident at Swinside Monday 17th May
You may have seen or heard of the accident at Swinside from networking, newspaper, TV, Radio news.
At about 4pm on Monday 17th May, Dave crashed into a barbed wire fence which torn open his harness air bag then he fell 10' onto his backside on to the stony bottom of Hope Beck.
He has a broken pelvis and internal injuries.
Rick Livingstone and I visited Dave (and wife June) in hospital at Carlisle Tuesday evening. Rick and June said Dave looked a lot better than he did 24 hours earlier when he arrived in the air ambulance. He will be transferred as soon as possible to Sunderland hospital for surgery (probably Wednesday 19th).
Dave wishes to thank all concerned in getting him to safety and for wishing him well. He hopes to make contact with you personally as soon as possible but in the meantime, I will pass on your regards and help provide you with as much information as possible.

I have edited out surnames for obvious reasons I dont know about anyone else but the papers have already contacted me looking for information, as far as im concerned a paraglider has crashed what more info do they need.
If Acro was easy they'd call it Cross Country

i do beleive that they do have his name as i was called and asked if mr x was a member of are club. i did say i was not sure as i know he was and that he may be a member of the cumbrian. he did ask about him by name so i think it is no secret, as like when i had my accident it went round the whole world on pg forum. this did upset some and the odd comment upset me at the time but on the whole i feel it was no problem and just maybe we all learn something about otheres accidents though probably not.
delaing with the media
Hope Dave gets well soon.
My best advice for dealing with the media is.....Don't!
If you are not PR trained you can make a real fool of yourself and others.

what i am surprised at is how he got my mobile number and the office nomber, is it through the club contact but i never give out the office on here. i tried to sell him my story but he did not seem interested.
still surprised in the media interest unless its about the age thing and the inspiration of some of the older pilots in the sport. i do think it surprises people about flying as they think we are some kind of nutcases yet its far from the truth. and even at my age they say are you a not a bit old for this sort of thing.
i still think in the right context the pilots that do these sports should be of inspiration as even with big injuries we come back and do it again, not like a lot of the whimps out there who break a toe nail and cant work again.
cheers gary

Dave, are you and Lance trying to practice first hand what we learnt on the first aid course 2 weeks ago
Get yourself recovered and back to fitness. We'll miss you out on the hill so we want you back out there.
Let us know when you are taking visitors
Take it easy, I'm sure you'll keep the nurses entertained.

What a poor bugger Dave is!
First he has the accident and has to be airlifted.
Then the NHS send him to Sunderland with the Macams!
Let's hope he gets well soon.
I hope that reporter had plenty of free mobile minutes when he called you Gary. I bet by the end of the conversation he'd bought a Bailey and a new wing.

Dave's op went better than expected - not an 'open book' fracture as indicated by initial consultant.
June is happy for folk to call or text Dave and visit from Wednesday onwards.
He's now in a general ward D43 Royal Sunderland visiting 2-5pm and 6-8pm.
The number of visitors may be restricted so beware of Dave selling bedside tickets to everyone.
