Venue for Meetings - Help

Post by Chris L »

Struggling to find a place to meet for our monthly meetings
The Newton Park no longer has a function room, The Cumberland Arms have sword dancers :o in every Wednesday from 8pm.
I've tried a few others and not many have function rooms any longer.
At the last meeting it was agreed we'd try to stick to the first Wednesday of each month still and prefferably in a pub in Newcastle which is central for everyone.
So if anyone has any suggestions or could make enquiries then post them here.
We still have the option of the Corner House on a Thursday if all else fails.
Feel the fear and do it anyway!

after some thought at the weekend then i think go with the thursday night, and then if the wednesday comes available in the future go back to that. i mean the place is perfect with big bar good function room with video screen pub grub.

we are never going to make everyone happy but at least it has everything we need there

cheers gary

Can't really see what difference a day makes Thursday night seems fine to me. The only other place I could think of was the Chillingham Arms where we used before.

Thursday night is OK by me, the only down side for me is if I am late for the meeting I can not hurry up and make up the difference by living close by on the door step.

Not like some lucky people who live a long way away and they can rush and make up the time.

I'd agree with Gary and John. Having been to meetings at every venue we've used going right back to the Blackie Boy, I'd say the Corner House is far and away the best venue we've had, having a good room with projection facilities, good parking, easy access, cheap beer and food available. To move to an inferior venue for the sake of a day would seem a retrogade step.

Go for the Thursday.

I must admitt it is a good venue but what do we have to do to stop the same happening again.

We will have to see how the next few meetings go but we might have to find a new Club Secretary as Thursday is the busiest day of the week for us and I often have to work till 8 or 10 at night so as I say I'll see how it goes.
If Acro was easy they'd call it Cross Country

I hate to be the one to piss on the party but thursday's no good for me I have always had to take a night off work to attend the meetings on wednesday, which is not so bad as its a quiet night but thursday's a bit busier.
what about tuesday :?: :?: :?:

That's true, but then what's to stop it happening at whatever venue we go to? I understand Chris has been told we're fine for at least the rest of this year with a Thursday. I know in the past we've found new venues and then they've messed us around after a few weeks. There's always going to be some people for whom the Thursday isn't so good, but then there may be others who suddenly find they can go that couldn't go previously. Not wanting to upset Colin or Bill or have them not come to the meeting but you can never please all the people all the time......

IT is probably the best room we have had so unless an equally good venue can be found it would probably be best to stay at the corner house and change the day even if it means i cant go

I also think the venue is worth keeping for the moment as it is the best room we've ever had.
Although thursday not the best night for me as I work late, but I'll just work something around it to get there but not the march meeting as we'll be off snow boarding in Italy :D

The general consensus is in favour of Thursday evenings at the Corner House so I have spoken to them and booked this up. Unfortunately they now have bookings in March August & December. (All other week nights the function room is booked) but from April we now have this booked for the rest of this year. So in March I'll try to get the conservatory again and postpone the presentation by Gordie until April. (Sorry Gordie) Unless anyone has other venues to use/suggest :?:
We also need to think about the Xmas Party/Presentation evening, and maybe do this as part of a Xmas meal/night out instead.

Thats another 3 months we will have a poor turnout as people really dont like being in the conservatory,

what about social clubs in the area.

Nobody has...

Post by ron freeman »

Nobody has mentioned the NHPC club constitution ? why does the club not revolve around this anymore ? (insurance, BHPA members, site policy) meetings are to take place on the first Wednesday of the every month...

Personaly I think we have had raw deal at the corner house they told us that if we book a buffet at the end of the year (Dec) the room was ours ?

Also many times over the years we have been told the room is booked out on the night of a meeting !

The fact that they booked the room out to someone else after all these years without telling us first is just not on ! so why should we be still buying there beer...

Time for a new venue sticking to the club constitution.

I am happy to find somewhere for our next meeting (in the town)

you know we take on a venue dont pay them a penny other than a couple of halfs and the of pint and expect the loyalty of a paying customer. i am sure that if we paid for a venue then you would find a different picture.

but as we would never pay for a site then paying for avenue is unlikely.

unfortunately change is part of life and if you dont then you dissapear

at the last meeting i did mention a comunity centre that also has a large field, the reason that we could also do ground handling throw reserves etc.

the next problem was no drink so then people dont turn up as they like a drink.

getting a good venue is easy as long as it is not in the centre of newcastle and i know of several. but then we could have a venue and no members as most of are members are frm newcastle area rather than nortumberland.

Listen folks, I think that we have to be very careful here that we do not shoot ourselves in the foot!

We have been using the Corner House now for many years, and everyone agrees it is an excellent venue. We all know how to get there, it has a happy atmosphere, good food so that those who come straight from work can enjoy before the meeting, reasonable prices also for drinks, also excellent fascilities for films and lectures, and nice and warm.

This is not an experiment, we know what we have.

All this must be taken into consideration when looking for an alternative venue.

The Stalwarts of our Club seem to agree. Why not agree to Thursday night meetings for two months - see how it goes- and then decide if we need to change.

Let us also consider the suggestion of our Chairman Gary Stenhouse that we should pay towards the room to ensure our future bookings, bearing in mind that these people have a business to run.

We owe a great debt to Alistair Wolf who hunted around and secured the Corner House Venue for us. So why not give it another couple of months and then we can make up our minds which way to go.

What facilities are at the place Ronnies suggesting??? If its got a bar and a good function room it might well be worth atleast trying it for the March meeting instead of the conservatory at the Corner House. :?:
If we like it and we can get it for the rest of the year I'll cancel the Corner House then, and if not then we'll just stick with the booking we've got there.
I don't think this should cause any problems with the Corner House as I'm sure if they get a paying customer for the function room on Thursdays they'll turf us out anyway
