Online Site Guide - NOTAM Stuff

OK, the new online siteguide is now available for the first stage of information. This is the NOTAM stuff I showed in the last meeting.

Right now this is all that is available. None of our site info is yet generally available as I'm still building the functionality and security stuff. But this will be the place to look as it arrives so put this in your favourites or bookmark it etc. I'll post further updates as different bits come online.

The NOTAM stuff is all held on the interactive map and it should be dead easy to use once you've played around with it a little bit - so have a go.

To get started, click on the link for the interactive map, and then use your mouse to zoom into the UK (quick tip: double click on the map and it will auto centre and zoom in to that place).

You need to zoom into level 8 or above (this is the 9th spiggot on the zoom bar) to see the NOTAM information. When a NOTAM appears it is shown as a circle of influence and a warning triangle icon at it's centre. Hover your mouse over the icon to see all the info about the NOTAM.

There are 12 different categories of NOTAMs and some of these do not mean much to free flyers. So the map is initially loaded with just Warnings switched on. You may also be interested in Restrictions (such as a restricted area becoming active or live). To change which categories are shown, hover your mouse over the big warning triangle top right on the map. The currently selected categories will appear. Click once to be able to modify these and then click on the link where it tells you to, to reload the map.

Just a note of warning, switching all of them on, will make the map slow as it has a lot of drawing to do.

Finally, please be really clear that just because a NOTAM is not shown on the map does not mean that it does not exist. The information for NOTAMs is taken every hour from the UK Air Information Service Briefing website, but I have no control over their content. Information may be missing or inacurate - although this is very unlikely.

If you are in doubt, you should always use your normal NOTAM check step that you already do religiously before you go flying!

Great start Mikey.

But, what I need now is some input from the boys in the know. Please! all you real pilots out there, can you tell me which buttons I should put on, cause quite frankly, it's all a bit of a foreign language to me.

Could we have a talk at a club meeting showing us all what this really means? We've got something that is obviously very important, visually easy to use, but I certainly need a little more insight into the interpretation of what I see.

Yep this is looking very good Mikey and I agree with Brian, it is a simple enough application to use but I too need a better understanding of what I am seeing.

Documentation on the category of NOTAMs is thin on the ground and I've done the best I can with the information on the AIS website. If you can see any problems or ommisions, please let me know (just PM me) so I can get them fixed - Cheers!

Cheers Mikey, the fog is clearing, I'll take some time on a rainy day to read it all and work out what I need. In the meantime lets hope I don't run into anything

I've had a quick flick through the menus this morning and the majority is for general aviation use and not much help to the likes of cloth flying creatures. There is one exception which is restrictions! I clicked on that and it showed danger areas over the north sea. Not for us to worry about but they may filter inland at times so worth keeping an eye on both warnings (notams) and restrictions.
