I can remember chatting once with Tony Anderson on Cross Fell, and discussing the aproach corridor to Newcastle airport, which of course steps down to 3500ft at Stanhope. (for those who dont know, Tony flies 757's for Thomas Cook)

One thing that has always caused me slight concern was that Tony mentioned that he would on occasions fly below the base of the corridor on the aproach to Newcastle. So potentially you could have a PG and a 737 flying VFR in pretty much the same spot.....

On reflection this is not much of a problem. If you are flying XC from Cross fell, the wind is going to be SW to W, and therefore the aproach to Newcastle airport would be from the North.

Which got me thinking - when a commercial jet is climbing out from Newcastle Airport (which they would be doing in a SW), would there ever be an instance when you would be below the corridor to the SW of Newcastle Airport, or would you climb out higher than the base of the corridor?

I would prefer not to meet a 737 at 3000ft.......

On climbout I can't see a commercial leaving controlled airspace unless someone is having a very bad day.............

The airspace around Newcastle is designed to keep commercial flights inside controlled airspace at all times during departure and arrival.An encounter with a commercial flight would be unlikely providing you comply with the airspace restrictions.

More importantly unregulated airspace between Newcastle and Teeside is busy on fairweather days with everything from microlights to parachutists to helicopters etc etc. all sharing the same bit of air. This to my mind is the greater threat for those flying XC towards the coast so keep a good lookout at all times.

If you do become unsure of where you are or have some doubt as to wether you have infringed airspace land safely as soon as possible. Your safety and that of other flyers is always paramount.
