OLC Scoring

This has been discussed before on here, but as this is now being used to score a club competition (the winter XC league) I think this is worth discussion. I've never understood how OLC scoring works, I don't know anybody who does. John says it doesn't matter as long as everyone is on a level playing field.....

...however, take the following example

Ron's flight at Horden, linear distance 6.1km, OLC distance 25.0km

compare to

http://www.nhpc.org.uk/nhpc/modules.php ... ghtID=2663

Alan's flight at Crimdon, linear distance 10.3km, OLC distance 23.9km

On this example if it was last year Alan would have flown a 20.6km out and return, doubled up to 41.2km. Ron would have flown a 12.2km out and return doubled up to 24.4km. Alan wins.

This year Alan scores 23.9km, Ron scores 25.0km. Ron wins.

Go figure.....

An OLC is scored on five turn points so if alan had done the run twice then he could have doubled his score I think ron-don done the run 2 and a half times therefore having a greater distance over the 5 turn points

If anyone is interested open a flight from the cross country league onto google earth on your PC and look at the markers they are the 5 turn point markers and look at how it works on an out and return and then how it works on an out n back and out n back again I think Brian Days example from horden is a good example.

So if somebody goes and soars 50 beats on Titlington they can get a good score in the winter XC league....... come on! (I suppose if he soars Titlington he deserves it though)

Is it a fair comp that changes to a scoring system which completely reverses the results from the previous scoring system. Hardly your level playing field John.....

You should come to the meetings and vote then. All that were there voted for. At the end of the day the best pilot will still win.

Then again Dave you can always be score master and collate all the flights and score them.......Me I can't be bothered because it's not important. If I do a good one it'll be in the NXCL.

And as for flying Titlington .........I'd rather come last which at the moment looks a possibility. I'm looking forward to April onwards.

Colin that was an interesting comment on using Google Earth. Loads of info on the flight.

I thought Ronnie was head of competitions and score master. At least that's what I thought until yesterday......

whenever Ive done a xc flight ( not very often) I just measure the distance from where Ive taken of to where Ive landed in a straight line
then phone ronnie give him the co-ordinates and tell him how far.
Does this mean Ive been missing out
I also thought we had voted not to score flights in the 2+ 2 =10 way

Not quite dave if you did that flight on sunday from Marske twice without landing you would have got maximum points but if you had gone on to do it another several times then you still would have only been scored for two runs.

Or Simply 5 turn point

Point 2 FURTHEST POINT OUT
Point 3 FURTHEST POINT ON RETURN LEG
Point 4 FURTHEST POINT BACK OUT
Point 5 LANDING

It should have been posted on this forum that tactics for winning the winter XC league need to be changed this year, in that all ridge runs must be done twice. I could have done my flight on Sunday again easily so long as Alan was still tied onto the bungee out of the back of my glider to be my witness (oh, that doesn't count any more does it?)

Also if you took off from Marske like you did then went to Saltburn then came back part the way then went to skinningrove and back that would increase your points rather than just Marske, Skinningrove and back which is really why GPS is needed for OLC as the scoring program analyses your flight and creates a 5 point from it that gives you the maximum score possible.

No one sees you from one year to the next, you do one little ridge run and now your demanding all maner of bollocks...

There is no need to post nore anyone to answer, just look back through the last 2 years of posts re the XC League, read and study the XC League.. Then come back with some sencible questions that dont involve your arse being wiped for you and I will be happy to answer.

I think thats a bit harsh Fingers there is more than just Dave who didnt understand that that was how it was going to work and how OLC works there are people who thought that OLC was calculated on open distance somehow.

Of course you may have posted in depth explanations on the forum I dont know and its easy to miss a thread or a post..

You have absolutely no idea Colin!

As For harsh? Editing equipment ceased to function with regards to the Xc League / Website about a 1 ago, after spending a year and a half trying to persuade the NHPC to use the gift horse that was given to them.

if you check the national xc league it is always little ridge run flights and turn point flights that winn the witer xc leugue. but come the proper flying season and they all get blown away with triangles defined goals and open xc. the reason why is the best you can do on a ridge run is about 40k..

to win is not just about flying it is also about maximising the way to winn and to use all the tricks available if you are not prepared to no how to do that then you can not complain if you dont win

So at least everyone now knows the best tactics to win the winter league ready for next year. If you're doing a ridge run do it twice.......
