Local newbie looking to paramotor!

Post by Anonymous »

Hi All, I got a few questions which i hope some people may be able to answer, I'm looking to get into para motoring and after doing a little research i was surprised to see that it was unregulated here in the UK. Obviously I could buy a wing and an engine and teach myself but am looking for some proper training rather than potentially killing myself (just to clarify, i have no intention of teaching myself!!). Where would be the best place to find training locally and what would be the estimated cost of training? I did find AXB Sports but was curious to find if there was a "closer to home alternative".

Looking forward to any replies.

if you can aford it i would do some paraglider training first then you can get the best of both worlds. as i have done both the biggest part of paramotoring is taken off and landing the bit inbetween is a no brainer. get eather one of these wrong and you will get hurt. if however you only want to go down the powered rought then you will not go wrong with paul haxby. a very good pilot and a great power teacher. from what i have seen he manages to get people airborne very quickly.

cheers gary

Spadeadam AIAA

Post by DanTheMan »

Hi guys - great forum

Just a quick question along the same paramotoring lines....I usually paramotor down south but was born and bred in the North Tyne valley. I see there is the Spadeadam AIAA covering the area that I want to explore when I'm back up North staying at my folks place.

I know there is no regulation preventing you flying in the AIAA but I don't want to become a statistic - one would expect the Spadeadam AIAA has similar times to those noted in the AIP, EGD510 is only open Mon-Fri or when NOTAM'ed.

So to cut a long story short, do you guys ever fly in that area, do you have a procedure that you follow, or do you just check NOTAMs and fly outside the hours in the IAP ?

Also for reference I have found the following numbers......
SPADEADAM RANGE CONTROL (01697 747321/95814 EXT 6388)
Carlisle Tower 01228 573629

Hi Dan the Spadeadam range control would be an excellent place to start as are the notams for that area. You being a local lad you will be well aware of just how busy the AIAA can get. It is generally Mon to Fri but I have seen the odd exception.

Thanks John, I'm very aware how busy the skies get down our valley, I was once unfortunate enough to watch a Tornado come down in a field behind our house when it clipped trees next to the dam wall. Anyway just remembered this site which has useful info....
Cheers
