GPS / airmap recommendations?

Post by Misk »

After landing last monday unnecessarily to aviod airspace I'm thinking of buying some more weight for the gliderbag.

Can anyone make recommendations for GPS / map / airchart combination suitable for PG?

At the moment I'm thinking Garmin 76C. Does anyone know of freeware for charts maps etc.?

Thanks
Ian

Does you Current Vario have GPS and map page?

Check this link for starters..

http://www.btinternet.com/~rory.oconor/ ... index.html

If you need more help with airspace files let me know.

Is there a reason you're fancying a colour display?

Hi
I fly with a competino which is a good compvario and datalogger but a hopeless navigational tool!
I think colour is the way to go since with a small screen it should help seperate geographical features from scairspace. I'll have a good look through that link when I get back from work - thanks.........

I fly with the 76c and its brilliant, it was Tony Anderson rigg and he downloaded all UK airspace plus danger areas, give Tony a ring Ian he the man to help.

Also as a back-up....I study the Air chart maps the night before looking key areas (towns & lakes) just in case my gps goes on the blink...

The 76C that Tony had might have been the same one I sold him. As a GPS it was excellent as for using it for airspace you need eyes like a hawk to be able to read it. The screen just isn't big enough for older eyes. I downloaded the airspace onto it but I'm not sure it was current.

Some of the moving maps used in light aircraft or microlights would be brilliant but I fear they all require power supply.

Hi Ian, I have the Garmin 60CSX and loaded with airspace, its easy to read, has a large screen and small body. I have a 2GB memory card in it so loads of space for maps and routes etc. I had a 76CS, which I thought was the bee’s knees before I lost it! But I find the 60CSX a much better unit --- the batteries last longer - it acquires sats Quicker - Not so bulky – Colour screen – ETC ETC I bought a handlebar mount for it and I have it fixed to my flight deck with a cable tie so the GPS is easily taken off and on, it works really well.
Good luck whatever you chose.

Thanks for your help guys! I'll do some research and may give you a ring Kitt.

Of course studying charts before take off goes without saying Ron. I got caught out in the comp as someone had wrongly told me the goal was at Bromsgrove - hard against BHX airspace  It was infact Daventry we could easily have carried on pushing south east and stretched the fun a little further............. It would be nice if you could 'switch off' layors of your airchart above FL080 the same as you can on GPS!

Ian

I haven't tried it on the hang glider yet but I've just got a Mio PDA with built in GPS and am running memory map software on that which gives you a moving map overlaid on the standard CAA charts that we're all used to. Once I start using it on the hang glider I'll let you know how I get on......
