Online Sites Guide update

Post by Mikey »

I've been spending some time on this over the last few weeks and made some progress.

All of the sites in the paper version are now online along with transcribed words. Plus I've managed to get most of the map symbols loaded up for each site as well as fixing some bugs and missing basic functionality:

http://www.aerositeguide.com/sites.jsp

So the first stage is complete.

Now I need your help to get all the information bang up to date. I've got this feeling we've got one or two more sites I've been hearing rumours about - should we include them and if so can someone give me the details.

But more importantly, both Ronnie and John Watson (to name but two) have used their ability in the past to edit the main content to bring it up to date. All club coaches have this ability (just make sure you logon to the forum before visiting the site guide so your status is picked up), and now the main sites are in it would be great if everyone could take a look and see if stuff needs editing.

Another thing you can do, even if you are not a coach, is to leave reviews about sites just like Colin has done for Horden:

http://www.aerositeguide.com/sitedetail ... iew=Review

So get stuck in and help other pilots with your years of experience of flying these sites.

If we need to change a detail on the maps or add something, this is currently best done by me, so just send me a private message.

What happens next:

Over the next 2-3 weeks I'll be working on the wind speeds for each site and a basic wind rose chooser for the sites.

Over the next 2-3 months I want to bring in the same system XC Weather is using for it's data feeds so you get the weather predictions for the whole of the UK on the actual site guide. In the future this will provide the extra ability to show you promising sites for the coming days, but this will take some work to get right.

Looking further to the next 6-12 months I want to link it to our XC system so you can see your flights on the maps, have a photo loader built in so you can load up interesting photos and tie them to a point of view on the map (see Horden to see this working as a demo), and get the UK flight space data in there so it can be useful for planning XC's.

More later...

Looks good Mike - Could you maybe edit Hogden Law with reference to hot/cold status of otterburn. Entry to this area is permitted at no time unless you are flying something heavy, noisy and covered in camoflague.

Nice one Mike. This has eaten into a lot of your own time and we appreciate it but it is definitely an asset to the club.

Thanks Colin, I missed that one. The site elevation and grid reference are automatically calculated for you when you add a site... Except Horden was the first one and I created it manually before I had the auto stuff working.

Cheers Ian, I've altered the safety section of Hogden to make the otterburn a no go area.
