Nice one Gary, I'd looked at XC weather this morning and was convinced it was to windy, and we were going to head for titters as well.
Oh well sometimes thats just how it goes. Had a cracking ride on the motorbike with Martin on a tour round Northumberland
followed by a nice hour and a half run so can't be to downhearted
Theres always tomorrow
Congratulations to you and Chris on what must be a record breaking flight in the Cheviots

How long have you been members ?
This might finally put to rest that the Cheviots hills are a great place to fly
as long as you are at the right site at the right time ! (no different to any hill in the UK)
I can't understand why its taken so long for club members to use this site in the right conditions....
A club member many years ago flew to the coast from this site on a paraglider but well done ! its not easy to get away from a small site.
The XC record for the Cheviots hills area is 45 miles.

Paragliding
Paragliding has been going on in this club for well over 17 years ! and there has been pilots doing all sorts of good flights in the Cheviots and they were not to fussed about telling everybody what they had acheived.
12 years ago in July I flew over the back of Moneylaws with a paraglider pilot, I was hanggliding and we got to cloudbase together then he flew into the distance towards the Cheviot ! I never saw this pilot ever again !
(could be still up there) I landed at Powburn next to the cafe.
Colin, A list of site XC records are somwhere on this forum ?

If you would like to enter a site record please send your flights to Ron Freeman via the message board and It will be verified...a take off & landing witness will do, most members fly with a GPS so your flight should be recorded ! if successful it will be entered into the record listings.

Naa he only got to KelsoNot sure but I think the 45 mile record from the Cheviots that Ronnie mentions was done by my old instructor Mike Mavin back in the eighties, who took off from the Bowl on a single surface school glider after a days training and ended up in Scotland.
Is that right Ronnie?

As the paragliding site record Gary. You'll have to try it now on your hang glider to have a go at John Wallis' hang gliding site record.gary stenhouse wrote:so can i now be put down as site record of 21k
taken in igc format and done on gps dump so proof of tampering
at last i have flown more than 20k this year
cheers tp pg champion
Strange how hang gliding records are always quoted in miles, and paragliding records in km isn't it.
Well done Gary

Dave Hume
Dave Hume, typing error should be - 35 miles Moneylaws to southside of Amble.
Mike Mavin was just short of kelso, great flight on the wing that he was flying 'Skyhook Cutlass' and I think his vario packed in halfway through his flight !
Its long overdue for some of our club members to try to break club site XC records, the knowledge & equipment is much better these days a 100 mile flight could be just around the corner
The Bowl is long gone (serious shooting area now) Hogdon Law is just behind the bowl so all is OK.

Malcolm Tulley !!!! Paraglider Pilot Anyone remember him..or his flights ?
Have a word with Anto, or even Malcolm him self as he just lives outside Threlkeld now. But when we were just starting training Malcolm lived in Alnwick and I seem to remember he did some cracking paragliding flights from the Cheviots. I think he may hold a good few PG Cheviot records.

Gps vs Maps
GPS vs Maps.. make no difference to going XC except gps is much faster !
Trigger points change all the time because famers change there crop fields all the time, the only thing that dosen't change is ridge lift...many a good xc flight has used ridges to keep them going or waiting for the conditions to get better
That was the fella 'Malcome Tully' when we went over the back of Moneylaws.

Re: Dave Hume
Only trouble is Hogdon Law is a north easterly which would put you straight into the danger area so no good for XC. The south easterly direction of the Bowl was clear airspace almost to Edinburgh.ron freeman wrote:

However all is not lost as going over the back of East Hill would put you on more or less the same track.......
