Just been looking at a list of features on a gps/ vario, the digifly leonado. It mentions
Thermal sniffer ?
Thermal centering function
Indication to last thermal
amongst others.
How does this work and do folk use these functions to good effect?
Also, the 5020 has a direction and distance to last best lift, are these used to find the thermal lost if you have flown out of it or is it used to find the last thermal if you want to turn back?
I'm a bit surprised at finding these functions, what other useful functions are used in the more expensive units?
Cheers
Jim

Have you not seen the coffee making and back massage functions on the Flytec 999000 Jim?
And the one that is due out next year has a built in retrieve function.....
I dont have a whizz bang gps/vario. The Garmin 76c and basic flytec seem to work fine for me.

It is sad to measure your life in terms of hours flown...... but even sadder not to.........

The retrieve function, I would gladly pay for that one, took 5 lifts to get back to Kirkland, the last one from Nenthead, a lovely lady with her 9 month old baby. I could have married her.
Ali, mine confirms what I know,
my 4005 is linked up with my ipod with a message from the wife saying
"You missed that one Jim, and that one...
Fancy sitting on that hill all that time to go nowhere.... I don't see the point..... you could have sat in the garage with your eyes shut listening to Clannad, like the last windy spell we had:oops:
You could have done those jobs I told you about...
60 hours flying? taking a whole year with over a month sitting on a hill getting piles, costing £1000's in diesel, not to mention wear and tear, Missed another one there...
Why arent you going with those, they look like they're enjoying themselves going over the hill? Isn't that where you wanted to go?
Go on then...Oops, missed another, arent you supposed to catch them and climb up a bit?
Well, I'l leave you to it, going backwards and forwards over the same bit of hill you went over last week.
See you when you get home, oh, did I mention its raining tomorrow?"

Mine indicates the earliest possible landing opportunities and has a localised 'chicken ranch' multiplier.
I believe Ali has his set to virgin lamb detector, that's why his flights get longer as the season goes on.
Many more settings available from the web site through download. I have a few sites bookmarked, but believe that other members have far more, I'm sure they will contribute in their droves once they realise what you are looking for!!!!

good subject as i beleive if when i did not get to the cloud and felt i had lost the thermal then the last thermal feature would of been a very good feature. used it in the past and it worked every time yet for some reason i have forgot to use the function.
as for going over the back the reason why it can be a royal pain in the arse. good preperation does help.
always when possible fill your cars to the max always leave your keys with the car for others to bring your car and keep good comunications before you loose radio or mobile reception.
all key things to making life easier and enjoying the first flight when you know in a few hours your car will be brought to you, this leaving you to sleep or get drunk in the wolfs case.
i was back on high cap within 2 hours of landing buy 1 hitched lift and then a lot of luck as mr wallace was driving through alston just as i was.

Yes, yep, aha. . . . . . . . . .
I'll be asking Flytec how I implement the nag feature on mine!
"You said you weren't going XC! You're not prepared! You Radios nearly flat! You've no airspace map! You won't be back till late! What do you think you're doing! Are you listening to me! Well are you!"
"Of cause I'm not I'm having wwwhhheeeeyyyy to much fun with my mates and I'm going!!!"
On a serious note the last lift indication is fantastic, you do need to be able to get back to where it's telling you to go though! Not likely once you've left the hill and it's even slightly windy on our machines on.
Of far greater use is the L/D over ground. "Get on the bar, get on it you sap! Now get of the bar and do some 360s I said 360s! Right back on the bar again!!!"
