Hello from a newbie

Post by Louis Dev »

Hello form sunny North shields.

Been lurking on here for about six months now and decided to introduce myself.
I'm in my earlish 30's and have been slowly learning to fly paramotors over the last 2 and a half years. Have several flights under my wings (no pun intended) and have decided that i want to also pursue the free flight route.

I did a days course approx 8 years ago at Powburn with rocket Ron on hangliders and reliased that to get a licence was going to cost me over £1500 at the time. I couldn't justify that kind of money after buying my first house, so gave up on the idea.
Then about 2.5 years ago i got my van stickered up and the guy had a screen saver of a paramotor on his desktop. To cut a long story short, 3 months later i had a 60hour old av8er corsair blackdevil and a i splashed out on a new Dudek Synthesis 34 wing.

I had 3-4 flights before suffering a horrendous motorcycle accident and breaking the following.
4 ribs in numerous places
left hand
nose shattered
chin bone fractured
shattered sternum
broken back in 12 places.
I was also dead on the side of the road and had cpr my 2 passers by.
I have since had two veratbrae and a rib removed. The verabrae have been replaced with titamium cages and i have full movemnet back, but still still have pain.
So that put a stop to PPG for a while.

Was almost having my first PPG flight a few weeks ago but due to motor problems i didn't take off.

Anyway, enough of the bable. I'm wanting to probably join this group of paragliders and get my CP to be able to freefly.
I was going to use Gordie who seems like a stand up kind of bloke. Yes he's in the lakes but i can hopefully make the most of the weekend.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello and hopefully make the next meeting.

sounds like a bad bike accident but after flying both paragliders and paramotors i would like to be very current on a paraglider before i got on a paramotor. problem one the weight as with your injuries i would think it would be a lot of strain if you have bad tecnique or landings. your accident must not of been long ago if you have a synth as they are quite a new model.

the next club meeting is 2 weeks today at the corner house

look forward to seeing you

cheers gary

Accident was Jan 2009. Had the rwo vertabrae and rib removed in aprilish time.

As for the paramotoring weight subject, that is why i'm going to try the free flight route. I took up the PPG as i think it's safer than freeflying. PPG you can fly nil wind days which means zero turbulance. (hope i haven't opened up a can of worms here

no your right about the ppg being safer in general, as like you say the theory is you are flying in smooth conditions. its good to see that even though have had a bad accident your just getting back on the horse.

there is not a better sport than free flying no a more frustrating one, but its worth the wait when it happens. mind if you are not too heavy i have a mini plane paramotor and only weighs 19kg and has over 50kg thrust so very light and easy too fly.

Hello Louis

Hello Louis, good to hear from you and sounds like you were very lucky to survive your accident., I am interested to know did you self taught to fly paragliders then powered paragliders and where you were training ?

PG & PPG both have there inherant dangers except there is more to go wrong with powered flying.. (thrust, torque, pitch & engine management)

Flying in calm conditions can be very nice but don't get confused between wind & unstable air they are two completely different animals.. even if there is no wind & the air is unstable it will be turbulant ! for very smooth flying best to wait for - stable air, overcast sky with light winds, take care.

Hope you make the meeting, cheers.
Maximise your time & dosh do both Hanggliding & Paragliding :)

Wish I was light enough to have a nice little engine like that.
I'm 6'3 and approx 17 stone, so by far not light.

Ron I had a now good friend teach me. He's got about 200 hours on PPG. He's done his CP with the Bhpa at Dune De Playa and his instructors course thre also. He doesn't do any free flying noe though.
