Back from my hols......

Post by AlastairW »

Sun, sand, Cloud9, Buzz Beach Bars Happy hour for cocktails……. It can of course only be Olu Deniz!

10 days of really hot weather, and some cracking flying, although on this occasion I was restrained and did not fly every day.

The flying itself was pretty strong, with the sky inverted as it almost always is, the inversion height varying from just above take off to about 8,500ft. And it was ROUGH at the inversion layer, with the wing feeling like it had a mind of its own.

The best day was Sunday, as there had been a thunderstorm in the afternoon the previous two days, which made the flying better. I acheived my heighest flight (10750ft) with a stonking climb from the 1700m t/o at about 8m/s. It was the kind of thermal that you did not want to find the edge of!

Speaking of the thunderstorms, five tandems took off at about 4pm on Friday 11th, in what was clearly an overdeveloped sky. They ended up pinned at about 2000ft above OD town, pointing in to wind, but going nowhere. The gust front from the cb then hit them. We were stood on the beach at the time, and the wind went from a gentle onshore breeze to a 30mph howling gale, blowing out to sea. So the tandems went with the wind, four disappearing round the headland, and apparently landing on the coast a couple of km away, but one got blown straight out and ended up in the water at least 3km from the beach…… I bet the passenger really enjoyed that flight!

The scariest thing was seeing the paraglider climbing whilst it was about 2km away from the beach, over the sea.

Susan had a tandem flight with Mahonei on Monday. He was told to be restrained, and he was, flying down with me wingtip to wingtip over the bay. Some marvellous pictures and a brilliant video, which I am sure Susan will bore you with if you ask!

And now back to the grind………!
It is sad to measure your life in terms of hours flown...... but even sadder not to.........

It might be the Oxygen police.
They'll never get into Seaton Sluice passed the underworld, guard dogs and the Rottweiller.

Good to see you back on the forum Steve, the arm has obviously healed well and is once again swathing a viscous line through the keyboard!
See you out there!!!!!
