Ground handling - Truck walking is not as easy as it looks

Post by Stuart Bertram »

Windy day so off to the field to practice ground handling.

I have got to say that that truck walking is not so easy but I found that it can be done if you let the vehicles slow down enough first!!

It is unbelievable how turbulent the air can be at low level on a windy day with the glider was upside down more than it was flying. Makes you think about what would be in store when landing out after a X country flight on such a gusty day if the wind picked up.

Too windy even to ground handle :(

Hi Stuart,
Just been ground handling myself in Herrington Park (behind Penshaw) and it was smooth as out. Theres plenty of flat grass to leeward tho', no trucks, just the odd dog walker and 4x4 to contend with. And the occassional dog prezzie! Which certainly concentrated the mind with my new wing overhead, that's all that's needed, the threat of cleaning the dog muck off!
Try it next time you're out?
Cheers
Jim
