Gary Porter Trophy

Post by brian day »

Claire is looking into various ideas for the trophy that was suggested at the meeting last Wednesday.
A number of people have already expressed an interest in making a contribution towards the trophy in addition to the contribution from the club.
If you wish to make a contribution, can I suggest you contact Claire as soon as possible so that she can make a valued judgment on the type of trophy to look for.
See you out there!!!!!

With enough donations Claire could commission an artist to produce something to far surpass Emma's find from America.
I know that Claire has, already had several very good offers of donations. Please, if you can, give her a ring and donate something, every little helps.
I would really like to make this something very, very special, for Gary, his family and all his close friends.
cheers,
Brian

The Gary Porter Trophy

Post by John Wallis »

After reading Colin's post mentioning the new 1-2 trophy I thought I'd bring this back to the front just to remind people. Maybe we could have some fund raising events along side the personal donations to give Claire some dosh. Brian your idea of commissioning an artist sounds a great idea. I can always run the famous JW quiz night consisting of flying questions / general knowledge. (Brush up on your Ernest shackleton knowledge) :)
Bill could run the raffle?
Maybe auction some special items?
All done on one packed club night.

Any other ideas?

P.S. Just found this link which shows the trophy Gary's daughter found. I don't know if it makes any difference that it's in the states...Might make it a bit more special if it was imported?

What sort of money do we have from pledged donations already

Actually it was Claire that mentioned it, but she thought it would cost too much. My attitude is that too much isn't enough, if we find a trophy or an artist we will get the money!
Great ideas John. As April is officially the start of our summer season we will make the April meeting a fund raiser especially for the trophy.
See you out there!!!!!

Hi All
Thanks for the donations so far we are looking at around £300 and just to keep everyone updated. I've spoken to the national glass centre about commissioning something, I've kept the brief quite open in that it could be we go for something "wing" shaped or something for example which could incorporate clouds or sky. I've also spoken to a more "traditional" trophy maker where we could look at something wing shaped using metal. The other thought I had and have mentioned to them is to incorporate the colours of Gary's Gin Zulu. I'll see what I get back from this initially and will keep in mind the website link to the USA posted here.

Both designers now have a range of paragliding pictures and are looking at some ideas with costs. I'm hoping to have further information for the next meeting. It could be that if we do get a few design ideas within our price range we put it to a vote or alternatively I may just ask for a couple of opinions, working in Advertising I know how difficult it is to agree design by committee!!
