radar masts to to low scar warning mr morton

Post by gary stenhouse »

wentt over to the low scar melmerby bowl, and had a nice fly all within melmerby bowl where its fine to fly.

however i flew back to land at millers leap where my car was and even though i was high and kept well away from live stock and only landed and was out the gate in 30 seconds i was acosted 5 minutes later.

the low down is he does not want people flying on theis area due to sheep heavily preganant and due to be brought in for lambing. however he then will have his cattle up there heavily pregnant so that is a no no too. he said that when there is no live stock about he has no problem but i think untill the spring is over then go to cross fell or fly melmerby and try and avoid this area to save any future problems.

however i then spent the next 30 minutes with him untill he only had one legg so it all ended in smiles

Hi Gary, I also had a bit of a scare on Sunday teaching hanggliding at Brandon, Ingram valley.

When I arrived there were a few sheep with new born early lambs (lambing 1st April) so I rang the farmer and he was OK as long as we don't get too close to them ! I was very surprised he was Ok about it !! so just in case we moved over to another hill.

This is the first time Iv'e worked so close to new born lambs and they were not bothered about us being there one bit :o

However.. even if we have permission to fly a site at this time of the year and if you see young lambs or pregnant cattle stay well away because most farmers will appreciate it or.. give them ring and check all is OK
Maximise your time & dosh do both Hanggliding & Paragliding :)

Strange as it is, about 5 weeks ago I was up at the top of the track leading to the radar masts beside the top gate while waiting for the conditions to improve. Then half a dozen cross-country vehicles came past me on their legal right of way.

When they reached the top gate they were unable to proceed because an unmanned vehicle had been parked in front of the gate.

I walked back from my car to see what the problem was and found that the drivers were trying to decide if they could tow this vehicle away from the gate so that they could proceed without causing any damage.

Then along the track a youngish man came, not a word was spoken, he jumped into the vehicle which was blocking the track and drove it away.

Bearing in mind that approx 5 miles south of this point we fly with permission from the Farmers and Shepherds who have sheep and cattle in this area.

Is there not some-thing odd here !
