Winter Objectives

Post by Sad Northerner »

Hi All

With the long winter nights and limited thermal activity approaching it may be an opportunity to get some things done.

I've got three Pilot papers waiting for people to do and two Advance Pilot papers. Can we agree to complete these in November maybe on a night separate from the club night?

Also, the club needs more Coach rated pilots. Would people be interested in doing a coaching course with the BHPA if I can organise something. Bare in mind that you don't need to be a ace pilot you just need to know your level and coach/advise lesser able pilots to that level.

Any interest?

Ali

Hi Ali I had thought about doing the AP exam myself I have done most of the tasks needed but it seems that for tasks 11,12,13 you need to have done a SIV course

http://www.bhpa.co.uk/pdf/advanced_pilot_tasks.pdf

† NOTE: Exercises 11,12 and 13 are all to be carried out over water with a recovery boat in
attendance and with the pilot wearing a buoyancy aid and emergency parachute (as per BHPA
SIV Fact Sheet)

would like to progress in the sport to AP but cant justify the expense of a SIV course

Im intrested in pilot exam ali.

As an observation new pilots seem to attach themselves to people who dont talk cross country. I think Brian Nellist would make an excellent club coach as he always has time for the new pilots and the new pilots seem to fit in well with him.

I'd like to get AP but am in the same boat as Bill, does anyone know of a course where you can just do the stall, spin and decent bits, I don't particularly want to do a full siv.

On gary's point - i'm sure I read somewhere you only need pilot raiting now to do the british championships.

Same as Chris n Bill, got a few surfboards we could leave lying around in the water and a bouyancy aid but I think it's about 20 years since it's been used, maybe a bit useless by now?
See you out there!!!!!

I have done most of the criteria on the flying side to apply for the pilot rating but need more information regarding the more theoretical side to flying.
is there anywhere online or any books with the theoretical questions likely to be asked for the pilot exam so I can learn & test myself?

I bought Jockys video a few weeks back and it's great reference material. He obviously states it's not a do it yourself SIV course but it does go through all the things mentioned in the posts above. Plus it's good to watch what actually happens when doing the moves what can go wrong  and how to recover. I think it's well worth the investment.

If you can get a boat on Derwent Water and take off Walla Crags or Cat Bells we could sell tickets for the club funds it will be well worth watching

Just a word of warning a lot of these new 3 line gliders dont act naturally when collapses are induced as the a's are not as far forward as a normal glider, not quite sure if B stall would still be the same.

Ozone test pilot Russell Ogden told me that when they were testing the new gliders for EN they had to attach lines to the leading edge of the canopies to produce a much more natural frontal, as things seriously went to s@:t without them.

If you read the details on the delta 2 (I'm assuming it's the same for other similar wings) you can do everything except speedbar full frontal collapses on an SIV course.

The only thing to note really with the newer ribbed gliders is if you get a full frontal, rather than going to "hands up" it's advised you slam on the breaks. I had a nice big full frontal the other week coming out of a thermal, slammed the breaks on and it was all over within < 2 seconds (video).

Well worth a watch is Russel Ogden talking about collapses on modern gliders and other things paragliding related here
